BARRIERE, B.C. — RCMP in Barriere are investigating an attempted child abduction.

According to a news release, a 10-year-old girl was walking along Dunn Lake Road at about 3:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 22) near Barriere Town Road.

She was approached by a man with the following description:

  • About 40 years old
  • 5’7″
  • Hazel eyes
  • Short brown hair
  • Brown beard about four inches long or more, shaped to a point at the end
  • Wearing a grey long sleeved shirt with black lettering and black pants

The man is alleged to have grabbed the girl by the wrist, said Barriere RCMP Cpl. Rob Welsman. She fought back, freed herself and ran off.

Welsman says an RCMP service dog was brought in to help search the area. Officers spoke to residents in the area as well.

The suspect has not yet been identified or located.

Welsman says since the incident was reported, organizers of certain youth events in Barriere have decided to cancel.

RCMP in Barriere are warning the public to increase their vigilance, and asking parents to remind their children of safety protocols around strangers.

Welsman asks anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage in the area to contact the local detachment at (250) 672-9918. Those who may have urgent information about the suspect’s identity or location can call 911.
