KAMLOOPS — The Mustard Seed New Life Community is preparing to open its Winter Refuge Shelter program next week, but with six days before its first night the organization is still in need of blankets for people who will be using the shelter.

30 mats are ready to be laid down in the dining room of The Mustard Seed for Wednesday’s opening night. Executive director Mario Barbo says the organization has received about 30 blankets so far but is in need of many more.

“We need at least 90 blankets because we’re going to be cycling them through,” said Barbo. “We’re going to be washing them and serving them again for people who will be using our mats.”

Blankets can be dropped off at The Mustard Seed’s West Victoria Street location.

“Everyone has old blankets at home that they don’t use anymore, so if they’re willing to donate we would accept them,” said Barbo. “We’re looking for single or double washable blankets. They can donate either used or new.”

When the mat program ends on Mar. 31, the blankets will be given out to people on the streets who need them.
