Kamloops crime rate down significantly over past two years

KAMLOOPS — In recent years, Kamloops has ranked at least in the top 30 of Maclean’s Magazine of Canada’s most dangerous places — but this year is different.

According to the magazine’s 2020 list for Canada’s most dangerous places based on violent crime, Kamloops ranks 67th. In the 2019 list, Kamloops was ranked 27th, and the year prior it was ranked 23rd.

According to Statistics Canada, Kamloops’s Crime Severity Index for 2018 was 100.76 — down from 110.90 in 2017 and 121.43 in 2016.

The Crime Severity Index is a measure of all police-reported crime, which takes into consideration both the volume and seriousness of offences.

The top 10 most dangerous places listed by Maclean’s are, in order, Thompson, Man., North Battleford, Sask., Portage la Prairie, Man., Prince Albert and area, Sask., Quesnel, B.C., Wetaskiwin, Alta., Selkirk, Man., Terrace, B.C., and Williams Lake, B.C.
