Basics for Babies giving youngest Food Bank visitors a chance for success

KAMLOOPS — The 12th Annual Basics for Babies event kicks off tomorrow morning (Nov. 22), to supply Kamloops’ youngest food bank visitors with much-needed supplies and food.

Crucial items such as diapers, formula, baby food, and monetary donations given at the event go towards little ones aged two and under who use the food bank services.

Kamloops Food Bank Executive Director Bernadette Siracky says it’s an important fundraiser.

“It’s hard to imagine how many children actually come through this door,” she says. “We have hundreds of children under the age of two who we’re serving every year, and thousands of school-age — under the age of 18 (children). And it’s up to us as a community to support their basic needs and that really is food, and the products that we are asking for tomorrow.”

Siracky says the goal this year is to collect $60,000, and 3,000 lbs of baby-related products for the food bank.

“It’s up to us to give that to these kids, because how is there going to be a different future if we don’t provide the necessities for healthy development, and for safety for these children?”

The United Way Thompson-Nicola-Cariboo is also helping out with the effort, and Executive Director Danalee Baker says making sure babies have what they need can bring much-needed relief for families.

“If we can just try and lift the stress off that family just a little bit. On trying to figure out where they’re going to get the diapers, or if they can find the formula at a cheaper price, and go shopping at the food bank — they have this great little area where you can go shopping, and it really brings dignity to those families.”

The breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m., and runs until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning from the Delta Hotel downtown at 540 Victoria Street.

A drive-thru option is also being offered to people on the go who don’t have time to stop in.
