KAMLOOPS — It was among the loudest the Tournament Capital Centre has been. More than 1,200 screaming kids packed in to watch the TRU women’s volleyball team on Friday afternoon.

They were into it, even before the opening serve, with chants of ‘Go WolfPack’ while the students used the bleachers to make as much noise as they could.

“It’s very interesting because it’s my first time watching a volleyball game,” said one student.

Fellow Kamloops student Jacob Gobbee added it was “a really cool experience. I’ve never been to a [TRU] volleyball game before, so it’s been really cool.”

The atmosphere was electric throughout with few empty seats, made even better with the WolfPack sweeping Regina 3-0.

The students made their own signs to show their support for the WolfPack. They even got to hang out with Wolfie. All around, it was a fun afternoon for everyone.

“Loud, crazy,” noted Gobbee.

Student Jacob Blair added, “it’s been super loud. We have to put headphones in so we couldn’t hear [the noise]. It’s just too loud.”

The SD73 students were at the TCC for their own elementary volleyball tournament, playing before and after TRU’s win. For WolfPack players like Hali Drezet, it’s fun to play in front of a packed house.

“I definitely didn’t expect how loud it was going to be, but I think it was encouraging. They cheered, even on the small points. It was encouraging to have that many fans cheering for us,” said Drezet. “It just makes you want to perform for them, and they look up to me, and I want to be the player I can be for them.”

TRU women’s head coach Chad Grimm says it’s a great partnership with the school district.

“I think it’s great for our girls. I think it’s great for the Regina girls as well to play in front of crowds like this. We don’t get it often,” said Grimm. “I think it’s nice for the students to see some top-level female athletes out there performing.”

Many of the students said after the game they will be back to the TCC to see more WolfPack action.

“Yeah, I’d definitely come back,” said one student. “I’d also like to watch a men’s game as well.”
