KAMLOOPS — The bells are ringing, and the kettles are out — as the Salvation Army begins its annual holiday fundraising campaign.

This year in Kamloops, Captain Cory Fifield says the Salvation Army hopes to raise around $350,000 in donations.

Volunteers will be set up at 16 different locations throughout the city to collect spare change, or whatever people are able to give.

“So this year we’ve got seven locations that will have a Moneris, and they’ll have those all season long. And so this year we’ll really get a sense of how that helps,” he says. “We know there’s a lot of people who don’t carry cash anymore, and so being able to just simply pull out your card and tap it, our hope is that it’s really going to help us in terms of gaining those funds.”

Money raised stays within the community to help the Salvation Army operate year-round. Captain Kelly Fifield says funds support its family service office and social service programs like the Tuesday breakfast, Wednesday dinners, and Friday family fun dinners every other week.

To run all these programs, the organization is always on the lookout for volunteers.

“It’s never too late. That will always be my response. It’s never too late. We’re always looking for volunteers — definitely with our Christmas kettles. Last year we had over 400 volunteers when it came to our Christmas kettles, and we need at least that, if not more, to just alleviate some of the pressure.”
