KAMLOOPS — A moving truck rental company has been fined more than $71,000 after hazardous materials were discovered during renovation work in Kamloops.

According to a penalty summary, WorkSafeBC inspected U-Haul’s commercial building that was under renovation in Kamloops.

At the time of the inspection, WorkSafe says, workers were removing drywall from the wall and ceiling.

No hazardous materials survey had been conducted before the work started.

WorkSafe issued a stop-work order, and a survey conducted later confirmed drywall compound as an asbestos-containing material.

“The firm failed to ensure that a qualified person inspected the building to identify hazardous materials before workers began renovation work,” the penalty summary states. “This was a high-risk violation.”

According to the penalty summary, a review of the decision has been requested.

It’s not clear which U-Haul location in Kamloops this affected.
