Police watchdog recommends charges against Kamloops RCMP officers after collision with stolen pickup

KAMLOOPS — The Independent Investigations Office is recommending charges against several Kamloops RCMP officers after a crash between an unmarked police car and a stolen pickup last December.

The collision took place at the intersection of Westsyde Road and Grasslands Boulevard at about 12:30 a.m. on December 8, 2018.

RCMP told the IIO that previous attempts to stop the pickup truck had been unsuccessful.

Upon his arrest after the collision, the driver suffered injuries.

IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says the investigation has determined there were reasonable grounds to believe the officers committed offences, and a charge recommendation has been forwarded to Crown counsel.

MacDonald says potential charges should be considered related to assault with respect to one officer and related to driving offences under the Motor Vehicle Act with respect to all three officers involved.
