KAMLOOPS — The volunteer call for Operation Red Nose has begun in Kamloops.

The designated driving service will need drivers and volunteers to help run 15 nights of service through November and December.

Hosted by PacificSport Interior BC, the 23rd annual campaign is not just for people enjoying holiday beverages looking for a sober ride home. The by-donation service is available to anyone who does not want to drive their car, for any reason.

The dates of operation this year are November 29, 30, December 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, and 31. Service will run between 8:00 pm and 3:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights and 8:00 pm to 2:00 am on Thursday evenings.

Operation Red Nose (ORN) is aiming to bring in 250 volunteers to fill a number of positions- which include Designated Driver, Escort Driver, Navigator, Phone Operator, and Dispatcher. Shifts are about six hours long, and volunteers can team up together for the evenings.

In a release, ORN says longtime volunteer, Tara Holmes, is co-coordinating the campaign with PacificSport’s Katie Klassen.

“I have been volunteering for Operation Red Nose for about six years. I look forward to the social camaraderie of reconnecting with our ORN pals,” Holmes says in a release, “We have so much fun helping with this service and keeping impaired drivers off the road, and raising funds for PacificSport sure makes it worthwhile. I am confident that if a team of three comes out to volunteer for one night, they will have so much fun and they will come back for more.”

New volunteers need to complete the Operation Red Nose Volunteer Application Form, and have a Police Information Check completed by the RCMP. People who volunteer in 2017 and 2018 only need to fill out the Operation Red Nose Volunteer Application Form, which are available online, at the TCC, Volunteer Kamloops, and the Desert Gardens Seniors Community Centre.
