Kamloops neighbourhood goes all out for Halloween

KAMLOOPS — Spooky season is in full swing in one Kamloops neighbourhood. That’s because the Brocklehurst Community Association is having their annual Brock Halloween Haunt.

“This year, we decided to take it up a few notches,” Darlene Clark, Vice-Chair of the BCA, told CFJC Today. “We’ve invited the neighbourhood to participate in a Halloween Haunt contest.”

Clark says once her family started decorating for Halloween, they got tangled up in the web pretty quickly.

“It’s grown over the years. We started with a cemetery, and we just add to it every year,” Clark explained. “A few years ago, we added Boris [the giant spider on the roof] to the display. Boris is out biggest prop. He comes out at the beginning of October, and at the end of October, he crawls back into the shed.”

Just a few blocks from the Clark’s home, Lisa and Jeremiah Funk’s front yard on Fleetwood Avenue is a bloodcurdling scene of dismemberment and gore. And the neighbours can’t get enough.

“I like doing it for the kids,” Jeremiah said.

“We just had a couple of young girls come through here, and they weren’t even phased,” Lisa said. “They loved it.”

The pair have been decorating their home for the past decade. Lisa says events like the Halloween Haunt help neighbours get to know each other.

“You run into someone at Save-On, and it’s like ‘Oh, I know you from the Halloween Haunts.’ So little events like this do help to bring the big Brock community together.”

There’s a bit of competition to go along with the community-building. Clark says you can vote for you favourite Brock Halloween haunt display until the 31st, and there are prizes for the top-three finishers.

“Each of the houses has a set of voting cards,” Clark explained. “You have from [Oct. 26th] until Halloween to check out all the houses, and on Halloween, you can just drop your card off at any of the houses.”
