MATT DAMON AND CHRISTIAN BALE TO DEFY CONVENTION AND COMPETE FOR OSCAR: Ford v. Ferrari‘s co-stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon are campaigning against each other for Lead Actor at the Academy Awards and other shows, including the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, SAG and BAFTA. It’s typical for leads to not compete against each other for top honor, with one, typically a recent winner, instead going for Supporting Actor, despite their role arguably looming as large as the Lead Actor nominee. This year, for example, Al Pacino in The Irishman, Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes, Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and even Jamie Foxx in Just Mercy are among those fighting for Best Supporting.
JULIE ANDREWS SAYS THERAPY SAVED HER LIFE: Julie Andrews appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss her new memoir, Home Work. In the book, she reveals that therapy essentially saved her life. She tells Colbert: “Sadly, I’d separated from my lovely first husband and separations were always inevitable and the marriage was over. My head was so full of clutter and garbage and believe it or not, it was (film and theater director) Mike Nichols who really tipped me into wanting to go to therapy because he had been … He was so sane and so funny and clear. He had a clarity I admired so much, and I wanted that for myself and I didn’t feel I had it. I went and I got into it, and it saved my life in a way.” The 84-year-old also shared her favorite film: Mary Poppins.
FIRST SHOW ON MAGNOLIA? Chip and Joanna Gaines have unveiled the first original series on their upcoming Magnolia network. The pair teased Home on the Road Tuesday, and they say the six-episode series will follow husband and wife Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez as they take their band, JOHNNYSWIM, on the road with their son Joaquin, 4, and daughter Luna, 1. “Amanda and Abner are magnetic,” Chip and Joanna shared in a statement accompanying the news. “Ever since we met them a little over five years ago, we’ve been drawn to the way they navigate family, community, and life on the road. They’re not just musicians, they’re storytellers and together, they are a true picture of the relentless pursuit of following a dream and making it a reality; but their dream doesn’t stop with them — it’s extended to their family and fans and everyone they meet.”
SCARJO DRAWS LINE AT THIS FOR COLIN JOST’S BACHELOR PARTY: Scarlett Johansson doesn’t know exactly what will go down at fianc Colin Jost‘s bachelor party, but she’s sure about one thing: she doesn’t want fellow Saturday Night Live castmate Michael Che to run the show. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon she explained that if Che were in charge “it’s going to be, like, by the Port Authority. And it’s gonna be very local. I don’t think that’s a good idea.” In September, when Che stopped by the late show, he said that he’s totally planning it. Without his help, “it would be so boring,” Che joked. “It would be definitely in the daytime and Scarlett will certainly be there.”
