KAMLOOPS — This week, the City of Kamloops is celebrating Waste Reduction Week. It’s a Canada-wide event that is meant to encourage everyday people to reduce the amount of waste they create daily.

Each day of the week has a different waste reduction theme. According to the City’s Solid Waste Services Manager Marcia Dick, there are countless ways a citizen can reduce their waste. She suggests injecting some fun into the process.

“I know a lot of people think about [reducing waste]. Maybe this is the week you’re like ‘Okay! I’m going to do it!’” Dick says. “There are lots of different ways you can do it — instead of buying a new Halloween costume, check out Value Village. Or organize a costume swap with your neighbors or friends or something like that.”

People in Kamloops can keep an eye on the city’s social media feeds for daily reminders on how they can help reduce waste. Dick suggests that a small but sustainable change in the way people do things can make a significant impact.

“You might feel like you’ve just reduced one [single-use] cup. One cup, one cup, or whatever, but collectively those cups are, I think, 2.1 billion tonnes a year the world generates,” Dick says. “We each have a little piece of that, and if we each reduce our waste one kilogram a week, then collectively, that’s a lot. Celebrate those small actions, and together, they’re big.”
