PETERS: Hold your nose and vote

Oct 18, 2019 | 4:34 AM

IF YOU LISTEN LONG ENOUGH, all political campaigns tend to return to the same set of talking points.

One of the most commonly used is that this is the most important election of our lifetime.

Rationale for that assertion is rarely given, but it could be true.

And while it could be the most important, we discussed right here a couple of weeks ago that this has been one of the least intelligent election campaigns we have ever seen.

So it would be easy to go into the voting booth on Monday with a darkly cynical attitude.

But having said that, there is also good reason to go into the voting booth with optimism.

We live in a democracy, after all, one for which many have sacrificed their lives to protect.

We are afforded the chance to vote and have our votes counted.

Each party has its detriments and each candidate has their flaws — as their opponents will happily tell you.

That has been true in every election this country has ever had.

Certain candidates will not come out smelling like a rose.

But don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

Perfect is far too much to ask for out of any party or candidate.

Choose a candidate who is good.

Good for the country and good for the world — not just good for you.

And if you have to, hold your nose — but hold your nose and vote.
