Advanced polls open tomorrow ahead of federal election

KAMLOOPS —Advance voting opens tomorrow for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo residents ahead of the October 21 federal election.

Voting stations will be set up around 100 Mile House, Clearwater, Blue River, Clinton, and several polls will be available in Kamloops.

Elections Canada returning officer Geoff Collier says the hours to vote have increased this year.

“Runs from 9 am to 9 pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday over the Thanksgiving weekend. So we’ve extended the hours from last election. It was only 8 hours last time, now you have 12 hours to vote each day.”

Collier says the advanced option has grown increasingly popular with voters looking to avoid day-of line ups.

Given that the election is federal, voters are asked to only go to the station they are assigned to, or cast their ballot from the Elections Canada office at Sahali Mall.

“I think the numbers were something like 15 per cent of people last time voted in advanced polls, and we expect that number to continue to increase. Which is why we’ve increased the availability of it so greatly after the last polls,” Collier explains,

“They were very busy last time, and we’re trying to get those line ups down.”

Elections Canada stresses that votes should only be cast ahead of time if people already know which candidate they’ll be choosing on the ballot.

Assigned advanced voting stations can be found on Elections Canada’s website, accessed here.
