KAMLOOPS — There are many changes happening at the Mustard Seed in Kamloops.

Construction is underway on a new Wellness Centre within the Outreach Centre and the non-profit has a new managing director.

Mario Borba is one month into the job, replacing Diane Down who held the position for less than a year.

Borba comes to Kamloops from Edmonton, where he worked with The Mustard Seed for five years.

“The CEO offered me the position and I gladly accepted,” he said. “I like to believe that I have a talent for fixing and updating and making things better. When he proposed the position to me, I saw it as, what many people say are challenges, I see as opportunities.”

Borba is hoping The Mustard Seed in Kamloops will become a place where clients will have every need met, whether it’s with employment, housing or health services.

“I like to think that The Mustard Seed is a one-stop shop, where an individual will come, and we’ll see them with a holistic approach,” Borba said.

Borba’s vision is beginning to take shape with the construction of a wellness centre in the former chapel.

“We’ll have our clients and guests come to not only be taken care of with a dentist, but also with a (general practitioner).”

The chapel may have been replaced, but Borba says the faith component of The Mustard Seed remains, as will the Winter Refuge Program.

“We’re going to be using the dining area, in the night we will take out the tables, put down the mats, and then in the morning we will take the mats and put the tables back,” Borba said.

Borba is also planning to reinstate and expand the men’s recovery program that closed at the end of July.

The Mustard Seed is hiring for a dentist and numerous other positions and will be holding a hiring fair in November.

“We would love the community of Kamloops to join us in this huge adventure of serving the population that we serve and having a rewarding career.”
