VICTORIA — BC’s Minister of Citizens’ Services stepped down from cabinet yesterday (Oct. 4), amidst an RCMP investigation.

In a release, Premier John Horgan says he was advised by the Attorney General of a special prosecutor being appointed for an RCMP investigation related to Surrey-Panorama MLA Jinny Sims.

He says he accepted her resignation from cabinet as appropriate under the circumstances. Sims herself also provided a brief written statement addressing the situation, though it is not clear what the specific allegations are.

“This afternoon I offered my resignation as Minister of Citizens’ Services upon learning of the appointment of a Special Prosecutor. I have not been given details of any allegations but there was no credibility to previous public allegations. I am confident that my name will be cleared but do not want to distract from the important work of government in the meantime. For that reason, I have decided to step away from my duties while the matter is resolved. On the advice of counsel, I will not be making any further statements.”

While the specific reasons behind the police investigation have not been officially confirmed, Opposition Leader Andrew Wilkinson issued a statement, saying the BC Liberals have questioned Sims actions in the past.

“This ranges from breaking FOI rules as the minister responsible, to her decision to write letters of immigration support for people on terrorist watch lists.”

In the meantime, Premier Horgan has asked Housing Minister Selina Robinson to temporarily take over as Minister of Citizens’ Services.
