RCMP warns of phone scam threatening arrest

KAMLOOPS — RCMP are warning the public about a new scam targeting local residents.

According to a news release from Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, the scammer calls and informs the target that there is a warrant for their arrest.

The mark is instructed to deposit BitCoin into an account in order to avoid being arrested by a police officer.

Shelkie says sometimes the caller ID shows the correct information for the Kamloops detachment.

She adds it’s best to simply hang up, as the RCMP never calls to tell you that a warrant has been issued for your arrest. Shelkie says if that were the case, you would be given a document in person, served by a uniformed officer.
