‘Dracula: The Bloody Truth’ set to perform from repaired Sagebrush Theatre

KAMLOOPS — The first production back in the repaired Sagebrush Theatre comes in time for Halloween. Western Canada Theatre’s fresh take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel takes to the stage next week in Kamloops.

Director Craig Hall says Dracula: The Bloody Truth is somewhat of a production within a production, as characters try to explain the truth of Count Dracula to the townspeople through a makeshift play.

Hall says the performance has a Monty Python style of comedy throughout.

“Doing that kind of comedy where it looks bad on purpose is quite difficult. And it actually takes extremely talented actors and designers to pull that off. And I think we’ve done a really good job of it. It was very popular in Calgary, and I think Kamloops audiences are going to really love it”

Christopher Hunt, who plays Professor Van Helsing in the production, says it offers something for everyone.

“Kids, people of all ages love the story- because everyone has some way into the story or character of Dracula. So we serve those people well, but people who don’t know the story and just want a good night out – we give them a good time too. So yeah it’s for everyone.”

After nearly eight months of work to repair a roofing issue, WCT Artistic Director James MacDonald says the Sagebrush Theatre is scheduled to open in time for the play next week.

“Everybody is super excited to go back in. They fixed the structural problem, and it might be a little not quite put back in its normal state for the show, but the show will go on. And we’ll get it all cleaned up and spic and span by the time we do the Sound of Music.”

With the theatre closed since February, the shut-down caused multiple performance groups in Kamloops to find temporary spaces.

Dracula: The Bloody Truth runs ahead of Halloween from October 10 to19, and tickets are available online or in person at the Kamloops Live! box office.
