KAMLOOPS — More than 200 volunteers will fan out across the city early Wednesday morning (Sept. 25) to help raise funds for Raise a Reader.

Raise a Reader raises funds for literacy programs in communities and works to increase awareness about the importance of early literacy.

Volunteers in bright orange t-shirts will be set up outside local elementary schools and drive-thrus from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m to collect donations.

“Really we’re just asking, we’re not averse to notes, but we’re just asking for small change,” said Literacy Outreach Coordinator Fiona Clare. “You know, you get your change, and so just remember to put some change in your pocket, because a lot of people say, ‘Well, I don’t have any cash on me.’ This year we do have the option of doing an online donation, too, at some locations.”

This is the 12th year of Raise a Reader n Kamloops.

All of the funds go directly to programs within the community they are raised in.

“Last year we raised over $130,000 with our sponsorships and the matching funds, so we’re hoping to raise about the same and we’re getting really close to the million-dollar mark over the last 12 years,” said Clare.
