KAMLOOPS — More than 100 demonstrators gathered along Columbia Street in Kamloops today (Sept. 20), protesting climate-crisis inaction, and promoting environmental practices.

Kate Nanson is one of the organizers of the series of protests, and says the response has been mostly positive.

“A lot of people are really supportive of it, and are really excited about it, and supportive of us,” she says. “There are definitely a lot of people who aren’t too. We’re here for those who are, and hope we can change minds in a peaceful way.”

The demonstration follows alongside global protests, which began after teen activist Greta Thunberg began skipping school last year to protest against climate change inaction.

Nanson says the group previously sent a letter to city council asking for more green practices on a municipal level. The protest is one of several organized in the city over the last year, which marched through downtown and finishing at city hall.

She adds, while the climate crisis is no doubt worrisome and the weight of environmental damage is heavy, demonstrations like today do bring a sense of hope to the cause.

“This whole group together and being passionate together is really reassuring because it shows me that there are other people that care. It’s not just me, or my small group, it’s a lot of people.”

After today, Nanson says the next climate change inaction demonstration is expected to occur sometime in November.
