Any bag will do for bi-annual Rotary Food Drive

KAMLOOPS — Any bag will do this time around, as the fall edition of the bi-annual Kamloops Rotary Food Drive gets started Saturday morning (Sept. 21).

Since 2008, the event has gathered over 1,000,000 lbs of food for the Kamloops Food Bank. Executive Director Bernadette Siracky says they hope to collect more than 50,000 lbs tomorrow.

“This is such an easy way to get your kids into volunteering, and into understanding how we’re really a part of the bigger picture in this community,” she says. “We need to support our most vulnerable, and when somebody needs a hand, that’s what we’re here to do, we’re here to help them.”

This fall will be the first time the yellow plastic collection bags will not be provided. Siracky says donations will be accepted in any bag people are able to provide.

“Because (in the past) we were ordering 70,000 plastic bags every year for the food drive. And one of the initiatives for Rotary is to be environmentally aware, and make good decisions that way, and we couldn’t support that anymore.”

To volunteer, or drop off donations, visit the Kamloops Food Bank at 171 Wilson Street between 10:30 a.m and 2:30 p.m.

For at home pick-up, participants are asked to have their marked donations in a visible spot by 9:00 a.m.
