Sam Smith Makes Announcement

Sam Smith has announced that they’ve decided to start using gender neutral pronouns.

Smith came out as nonbinary/genderqueer earlier this year, but at the time said they would keep using he/him pronouns. But in a Twitter thread on Friday, the singer announced they would be “changing my pronouns to they/them after a lifetime of being at war with my gender.”

In a March interview, Smith said they are “not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between.” They had “always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality,” and decided at the time to come out as genderqueer, describing that as meaning “you do not identify in a gender.”

Smith has now taken that announcement a step further, going on to say in a post that they “understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now.”

“I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am,” Smith went on to say. “So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open.”
