Parkcrest students resume classes

Sep 16, 2019 | 5:27 AM

KAMLOOPS — Today will be the first day for displaced Parkcrest Elementary students at the old George Hilliard School.

After a fire destroyed the Parkcrest school September 5th, students around the district had to shuffle around in order to get back to class.

TREC students now out of the George Hilliard building will be in NorKam and John Tod. There’s a meeting for parents and guardians tonight at 6:00 PM at the Henry Grube Centre. The Bridges program will be moving to John Tod with an opening date yet to be set. Bridges staff will hold an open house this afternoon from 1-2 PM at the John Tod Centre. while the rest of the Twin Rivers students will start this morning.

Four Directions students who were at George Hilliard will wind up at Happyvale. But two preschools at the school site will be moving to a new space at the Kamloops Christian School in the next three weeks, and the Big Little Science Centre, also located at Happyvale, is also searching for a new home. In the meantime, Four Directions students start school at 9:00 AM this morning in the Xchange Lab in the newly constructed United Way building at 285 Tranquille Road. The United Way and TRU offered the space on an interim basis immediately after the fire.

The District says the shuffling around is all obviously temporary while it prepares more long-term options.

Meanwhile, selective demolition is underway at the Parkcrest site. A HazMat coordinator is keeping tabs on the work to ensure safety and a consultant is monitoring air quality while the work is being done.
