KAMLOOPS — You may spot a few thousand turtles swimming down the river this weekend for the 18th Annual VW Turtle River Race.

The event will be held at Riverside Park on Saturday from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Participants adopt a rubber turtle that will race for the chance to win some big prizes.

“Our top prizes include WestJet flights for two anywhere that they fly and a Rocky Mountaineer train trip for two,” said Western Canada Theatre Special Events Manager Ali Webster. “Those are just the top prizes, we’ve also got $1,000 worth of groceries at Save-On Foods, shopping spree at Aberdeen Mall, Surplus Herby’s, we’ve got adventure packages for Treetop Flyers, Interior Whitewater Rafting and more.”

For the ninth year in a row, Volkswagen of Kamloops has chosen Western Canada Theatre’s Youth Education Programs as the recipient of proceeds.

Turtles are still available for purchase.

“You can come down to Riverside Park on the day of, and as long as you’re there about half an hour before race time you’re still able to purchase a turtle,” Webster said. “It’s $10 per turtle or three for $25, and like I said, it all goes towards supporting Western Canada Theatre’s Youth Education Programs.”
