Terry Fox continues to inspire as organizers prepare for annual fundraiser

KAMLOOPS — The Terry Fox Run takes place this weekend in Kamloops, and organizers are hoping for a large turnout.

Every year communities across Canada remember Terry Fox by hosting this fundraiser for cancer research.

Fox lost his life to cancer in 1981, never finishing his Marathon of Hope. He was 22 years old.

“This is the 39th year,” said Kamloops run organizer Andrea McCurrach, “and I think he resonates with so many Canadians because he was just an average kid from Port Coquitlam, who set his mind to do something pretty incredible. And, running across Canada is no small feat, especially with one leg and not being well. So, I think it resonates with us that if he can do something amazing then surely we can keep his memory alive and try to do our part for cancer research.”

The local Terry Fox Run will start at 10:00 a.m. Sunday at the bandshell at Riverside Park. Registration is at 9:00 a.m.

There were more than 400 people at last year’s event and McCurrach hopes this year will see even more runners attend.

“I would just love if everybody would come out on Sunday, rain or shine,” McCurrach said. “Terry ran in the heat and the rain, so we can, too, and I would encourage people to register online at terryfox.org. You don’t have to donate, it’s an all inclusive, fun event for everybody. There’s a 1K walk in the park, there’s a 5K run and a 10K run, but you can also walk those or ride those, however you choose to do it.”
