KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops say a student’s poor choice of words on Snapchat could have landed her in serious trouble.

On Tuesday (Sept. 10), Kamloops RCMP were notified that a student from Sa-Hali Secondary had made a threat against the school on Snapchat.

Through investigation, police say she was identified. Officers attended her home to meet with her and her parents, where she admitted to posting the message.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the student didn’t realize that what she thought was an innocent play on words could be deemed as an actual threat.

“Every threat made on a school, no matter what media it comes through, is taken very seriously,” says Shelkie. “It takes a tremendous amount of resources to react to these threats and to investigate the source of the threat. It is critically important for parents to stress to their children the consequences of making inappropriate comments regarding such matters in any and all school settings.”

The student will not be facing any criminal charges.
