KAMLOOPS — An RCMP blitz Friday (Sept. 6) found a torrent of Kamloops drivers disregarding the rules of the road.

Mounties from the Integrated Road Safety Unit, Central Interior Traffic Services and Kamloops Municipal Traffic Section teamed up and issued no fewer than 180 tickets Friday.

More than half of those tickets, 91, were issued for using electronic devices while driving. Another 71 tickets were issued for people not wearing their seatbelts.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the numbers are very high.

“Last week, the total number of violation tickets for Use of Electronic Device while Driving was 133 and for Fail to Use Seatbelt was 102,” said Shelkie in a release. “Motorists need to put down their phone and buckle up. It’s not just a matter of having to pay a fine if you are caught offending, it could be a matter of life and death.”
