TRU Soccer teams in action over weekend

KAMLOOPS — It was a mixed bag for the TRU Men’s and Women’s soccer teams over the weekend.

The women’s soccer team played to a draw in Calgary with the Calgary Dinors, while the men’s team dropped a 1-0 decision to Trinity Western Friday and tied 1-1 with the University of Fraser Valley Saturday.

ABBOTSFORD,BC—A late goal scored in extra time has resulted in the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack leaving the Fraser Valley with a single point in Canada West men’s soccer on Saturday (Sept 7).

The Fraser Valley Cascades got a goal from Mikael Mainella (1st year, forward, Surrey, BC) as they rallied to tie the WolfPack 1-1.

The result leaves Thompson Rivers with a 1-1-2 record which is good enough for sixth place in the Pacific Division. Fraser Valley is in a three way tie for third with a record of 1-2-3.

SYNOPSIS

The WolfPack opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a goal from Josh Banton. Banton capitalized on a UFV turnover and pounded in, moved to the right side of the box and chipped it high right side Thompson Rivers outshot the Cascades 15-10 in the contest but were down 7-3 in that category after the first half.

The Cascades got a goal in stoppage time in the second half. There was a loose ball in front of TRU keeper Jackson Gardner (2nd year, Chilliwack, BC). He dove for it and Mainsella put it over top of him.

LANGLEY,BC—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have suffered their first set back of the young Canada West men’s soccer season.

Playing their first league match on the road, the WolfPack went into Trinity Western University and fell 1-0 to the previously winless Spartans. The Spartans move to 1-2 on the year while Thompson Rivers falls to 1-1-1.

SYNOPSIS

The WolfPack gave up the lone goal in the first half as fourth year midfielder Jacob Low of the Spartans took the pass from Jake Ruby (1st year, defender, North Vancouver, BC) and beat TRU keeper Jackson Gardner (2nd year, Chilliwack, BC).

The WolfPack had only one shot on goal. It came from Dylan Hooper (2nd year, midfield, Winnipeg, MB) in the second half

Calgary, AB— When is a tie as good as a win? When you are playing one of the top ranked teams in the nation. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s soccer team must be feeling that after they went into Calgary and drew the Dinos 1-1. The match was played Saturday (Sept 7) at Dino Field.

The WolfPack have a record of 0-1-1 while the Dinos are 1-0-1. Calgary is ranked in the top 10 in U SPORTS to start the season.

SYNOPSIS

The WolfPack opened up the scoring in the 31st minute when Camryn Curts (3rd year, midfield, Courtenay, BC) took a pass and beat the Calgary keeper. Chantal Gammie (2nd year, forward, Smithers, BC) drew the assist.

The Dinos tied it in the 68 th minute. Montana Leonard (4th year, midfield, Richmond, BD scored her third of the young Canada West season. Taylor Dangerfield (5th year midfield, Calgary,AB) got the assist.

TRU keeper Danielle Robertson (3rd year, Courtenay, BC) was busy. Calgary had 13 shots on goal compared to the WolfPack’s four on the Calgary net and Lauren Houghton (3rd year keeper, Calgary, AB). Robertson made seven saves in the first half alone.
