“We’re working with an RCMP investigator, a private insurance investigator as well as a restoration company and an excavation company. We’re slowly trying to remove pieces from the outside of the building to try to (get) a closer look at the cause and origin of the fire.”

The initial call to fire crews noted smoke was coming from the roof of the building, and Cassidy says the heavy excavators are working their way in to the origin point.

“We’re just carefully using the machinery to pick pieces away and we’re being cautious with the structural integrity of the building,” said Cassidy.

Whereas most house fires involve wood-framed structures, the school is not, and Cassidy says that will affect the way inspectors can get in safely.

“We have a large steel frame that has been compromised by a heavy fire load and very high [temperatures].”

Cassidy says more information on the investigation could become known later this week.
