KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue crews remain on scene at Parkcrest Elementary School in Brocklehurst Friday morning (Sept. 6). The school was destroyed by a blaze that broke out just after 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

A few firefighters could be seen cleaning up the scene at 9:00 a.m. — a time when students would normally be settling in for their first classes of the day.

WATCH: CFJC’s Dylana Milobar filed this report Thursday evening.

At the same time, School Disrict 73 officials are meeting to begin developing a plan for the future for Parkcrest students and staff.

In the short term, parents are being asked to make alternate childcare arrangements for Friday and all of next week (Sept. 9-13).

Both the Big Little Science Centre and the Kamloops Art Gallery have offered programs for Parkcrest students and families free use of their services.

In the longer term, the City of Kamloops has committed to help the district find facilities in which to get the school year underway.

Parkcrest parent Sarah Black has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to help compensate “teachers and staff that have lost everything they have accumulated over the many years of teaching.”

CFJC Today will bring you more coverage of the fire throughout the day Friday.
