KAMLOOPS — The Mark Pennington era officially began today for the TRU women’s soccer team, but the new WolfPack head coach will have to wait another day to earn his first win.

The WolfPack dropped a 1-0 decision in their regular season opener against the University of Northern B.C. in Prince George on Thursday afternoon.

The Timberwolves drew first blood in the battle of the dogs, scoring early in the 11th minute on a strike by Paige Payne. The home team held on for the next 79 minutes to win the first USPORTS game of the season.

“Tough opening day result. But some positives to take away from the energy and the performance. I thought on the day, UNBC was really good, especially in the first half. They came out with an intensity and a shape tactically that we had some issues dealing with initially. Once we figured that out and regrouped a bit, we got better,” said Pennington on the loss.

The WolfPack were heavily outshot by UNBC 18-8, relying on goalkeeper Danielle Robertson to keep the game close.

The women get a day off on Friday as they travel to Calgary for a meeting with the Dinos on Saturday morning.
