KAMLOOPS — September 10 marks World Suicide Awareness and Prevention Day.

After a year’s hiatus, the local event held to mark the day will be back this year. Jolene Lindsey with C and C Resources for Life is spearheading the event.

“We’ve kind of revamped it a bit and revived it a little bit and the people who have come out from the community as volunteers to be a part of it, I’m just so excited,” Lindsey says. “It seems like every year the right people land on the doorstep at the right time to bring the event together so I’m really looking forward to this year’s.”

The event begins at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrews on the Square Tuesday. Local residents, including keynote speaker Mel Rothenburger, will address the crowd, and drummers will perform.

A candlelight vigil will be held at the end of the evening.

“Please spread the word to anybody that you think might need to come and might benefit from being there,” Lindsey says. “It’s an evening of awareness and conversations but an evening of healing as well, and really it’s about bringing honour to the people we have lost and busting the stigma associated with those losses.”

For more information you can contact Jolene Lindsey at (250) 554-4747, or visit the Facebook page for the event here.

Next week, CFJC Today will be airing You’re Not Alone — a series focusing on suicide awareness and prevention. Watch the video below for more information.
