First-day head count shows more students needed to keep Westwold Elementary open

WESTWOLD, B.C. — After closing last September when no students showed up on the first day, the future of Westwold Elementary is still to be determined.

The Kamloops-Thompson School District Board of Education ultimately agreed to keep the school open for the 2019/2020 school year, as long as at least six students enrolled.

So far, Superintendent Alison Sidow says preliminary numbers haven’t met that goal.

“We have four students registered at Westwold, and I understand there is a fifth student who may be coming, and that’s encouraging, but we need six.”

If the magic number is not met, students will attend RL Clemitson in Barnhartvale.

But for now, Sidow says the District will be contacting parents in the area to ask if they’ll consider enrolling their kids at Westwold.

“It’s a beautiful little school and it would be a shame to see it close.”
