KAMLOOPS — RCMP and ICBC are asking drivers to be safe and alert this long weekend — along with the first week of school next week.

According to ICBC, the last long weekend of summer sees an average of 2,200 crashes across the province.

There will be many RVs, motorcycles and trucks on the highways, along with extra pedestrian and cyclist traffic on city roads.

Over Labour Day weekend in the Southern Interior, an average of 77 people each year are injured in 330 crashes.

ICBC is also reminding drivers to pay close attention to the roads in school zones next week.

Drivers should leave extra travel time, stay focused on the road, and watch for children.

Every year, 380 children are injured in crashes while walking or cycling, and five are killed across B.C.

In the Southern Interior, 49 children walking or cycling are involved in crashes each year.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s always hectic during the first few weeks of a new school year while everyone adjusts to a new routine.

“Drivers are asked to be cautious and remember school speed zones and crosswalks, as well as loading and unloading areas for school buses and parent vehicles.”
