Missy Elliott was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards last night (August 26th). Many have vocalized that her award and performance were long overdue. Nonetheless, her medley of hits practically broke Twitter and other social media platforms.

The Virginia-native performed a medley of hits, from “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Get Your Freak On,” to “Past That Dutch,” Work It” and “Lose Control.” To add icing on the cake, Missy brought out Alyson Stoner, who most remember as the little girl from her “Work It” video.

In her speech, Missy – who was introduced by Cardi B, humbly said, “I promised I wouldn’t cry this time because I cry at every awards. But this Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me. I’ve worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award, so it means so much to me. I promise y’all, it don’t go unnoticed the support and love you’d showed to me over the years.”

Missy also shouted out fellow performers Janet Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and Busta Rhymes. She closed out her speech saying, “Lastly, I want to dedicate this to the dance community all around the world. Because when you get on the stage with these artists … y’all are not just props. Y’all are the beat to the heart.”
