Some salmon passing naturally through Big Bar slide

BIG BAR, B.C. — A major milestone has been achieved in the clearing of the Big Bar landslide near Lillooet.

The provincial government says fish counting data is showing that some limited natural passage through the slide obstruction on the Fraser River has been established for salmon migrating north.

Calling it a significant and hopeful step forward, the province says there is still work to do before all fish can transit above the slide.

While work is being done to create stable, long-term natural passage, helicopter transfers of the fish continue.

So far 39,000 salmon have been choppered past the slide, and roughly 6,700 have made it through on their own.
