KAMLOOPS — From a fantasy fiction novel to an inspiring true story, a mother-daughter author duo are in town for a book signing this weekend.

Janet Walmsley and her 26-year-old daughter Jenny Story are award-winning published authors.

It’s something Walmsley wouldn’t have thought possible when Story was diagnosed with low-functioning autism as a toddler.

Story has worked hard to release her first book in a young adult fantasy trilogy, and her mother has documented the journey of raising a child with autism.

“I’ve got to give Jenny so much credit for trekking through the bullying, working hard at her academics,” Walmsley says. “She had to work extra special hard to go where she wanted to go which was being an animator and writing stories and publishing books. So (my book is) my view of what she went through.”

Walmsley’s book, The Autistic Author and Animator, documents the challenges Story faced after being diagnosed with autism.

Despite that, she reached her dream of becoming a professional animator and published author.

Story’s book Dysnomia focuses on a young woman named Layla who sets out to prove herself. Strong-willed and courageous, she’s determined to show that she can do anything a boy can do.

“It’s important to know ‘Hey there’s no limits for what you can or can’t do’,” Story says. “If you want to do it, you can do it, just work hard and keep going.”

Walmsley and Story will be at the Chapters bookstore in Aberdeen tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Story hopes her novel will help inspire young kids to go after their goals.
