Incoming boost in Kamloops transit hours to include busy university area

KAMLOOPS — Starting September 1, Kamloops transit users will have an extra 3,000 hours added to bus schedules.

Just in time for back-to-school season, BC Transit spokesman Jonathon Dyck says high-priority areas like Thompson Rivers University, which services many students going to and from campus, will benefit from the boost.

“So these hours will largely be going to expand weekend and holiday service in the system, and enhance ongoing service reliability connecting key routes to Thompson Rivers University.”

Alongside extra route times, transfer tickets for changing buses will be no more — replaced by a $4 day-pass program.

“Fare changes are decided by local governments, in this case, the City of Kamloops, based on advice from BC Transit,” Dyck explains. “One thing we take very seriously is trying to make our fare structures in our communities as simple as possible, and as easy to understand. Otherwise it does cause confusion.”

Dyck says other customers in Victoria and Nanaimo who already experienced the change found it was actually better to ride the bus for the whole day, rather than have the one switch transfer ticket offered.

With more and more people choosing to take the bus, Dyck says the uptick in service hours was needed.

“In 2018/2019, there were over four million passenger transit trips in the Kamloops transit system. And that’s an increase of nine per cent from the year prior,” he says. “From a BC Transit perspective, we have grown by six per cent in terms of passenger trips last year compared to the year before.”
