KAMLOOPS — Ahead of a new season, the WolfPack women’s volleyball team has scored another top-level high school recruit, and this one is from a province TRU hasn’t tapped into historically.

Hadley Schmidt from Saskatoon is the first volleyball recruit from Saskatchewan in 11 years. She won’t be eligible to play until the 2020-21 season.

“I loved the hometown feeling as soon as I arrived in Kamloops,” said Schmidt. “When I practiced with the team, I loved the family feeling and the way the girls welcomed me with open arms.”

Women’s head coach Chad Grimm added, “We were looking for a setter for that age group. We have Anastasiya [Muzyka] and Abby [Spratt] back-to-back years. But they will leave us at some point. I had some contact with Hadley. Saw her play at the Nationals in Toronto and brought in [TRU assistant coach] Drew Venables, who was a setter to come in and watch her as well. We are happy she has decided to make Thompson Rivers her choice. She is a good athlete and is not afraid to take calculated risks on the floor. She is not afraid to make tough sets but not at the wrong time. I was impressed with that. Off the court, she is a nice person and a hard worker. She is a small town girl that has a good degree of toughness that I think will help her be a success at this level.”

Schmidt hopes to one day study law at TRU. She’ll be taking courses in the hopes of earning a Bachelors of Business Administration.

She joins Ellie Oestreich, an outside hitter from Grasmere, B.C. The two played against each other at the recent U-17 nationals, which were held in July in Nova Scotia. Saskatchewan placed fourth in that event.
