Installation begins for supportive modular housing units on West Victoria Street

KAMLOOPS — After a months-long delay, modular units are finally being craned into place beside the Emerald Shelter on West Victoria Street.

The crane began lifting in the 42 supportive modular housing units on the weekend.

By tomorrow (Tuesday) night, the fourth and final storey of the building should be in place.

The units were part of a government announcement in January of 2018, to provide 100 affordable units in Kamloops.

The West Victoria Street project was pushed back, but is now moving along at a quick pace.

“The added sort of layer, of course, is that we’re doing it at night, which was not part of the original plan,” said Christa Mullaly, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Kamloops. “Obviously, with the construction on West Victoria Street we’ve had to make some other arrangements around how this project is rolling out.”

In addition to the housing units, the building will also contain some amenity space on the ground level.

There will be 24/7 staffing on site, a meal program, and a medical room.

The residential units have not yet been filled.

“The units will be filled through the Coordinated Access Table here in Kamloops,” Mullaly said, “it’s a group of service providers and housing providers that come together twice a month and based on the folks that kind of come to the table, residents are selected on that process.”
