BC Teachers’ Federation goes back to the bargaining table

KAMLOOPS — The president of the BC Teachers’ Federation is in Kamloops as another round of mediated bargaining begins with the province.

Teri Mooring says she is hoping teachers will be able to start the school year with a collective agreement.

With two weeks to go until classes begin, teachers are hoping to prevent any student learning conditions from being rolled back.

They are also asking for higher wages.

“We’re significantly behind in terms of salaries we’re the lowest paid teachers in the western provinces and the second lowest paid teachers in all of Canada,” Mooring said. “That means that it’s really hard to recruit teachers to B.C. and we have a significant teacher shortage.”

Even as teachers prepare their classrooms for the upcoming school year, Mooring says it’s too early to begin thinking about any kind of classroom disruptions.

“We haven’t taken a strike vote and so we’re still focused on August and getting a deal by August. Any kind of speculation around job action is premature.”
