Rate of overdose deaths in Interior Health region lowest in province

KAMLOOPS — The number of fatal overdoses in B.C. is steadily declining.

A new report by the BC Coroners Service shows there were 73 suspected fatal overdoses in June, which represents a 35 per cent decrease from the number of deaths in June 2018.

“For the first six months of 2019, there were 538 illicit drug toxicity deaths, a decrease of approximately 30 (per cent) over the same six-month period in 2018 when 763 were reported,” the report states.

Fentanyl has been detected in most overdose deaths in the province.

According to the report, there have been 19 fatal overdoses in Kamloops so far this year.
