BET ROUNDS OUT SISTAS CAST: BET‘s Sistas has added Chido Nwokocha, DeVale Ellis, Brian Jordan Jr., Kevin Walton and Anthony Dalton as series regulars, joining Ebony Obsidian, Mignon Von and Novi Brown in the one-hour drama from BET Networks and Tyler Perry Studios. Perry is writing, producing and directing the show, which follows the lives of single black women navigating the ups and downs of work and love.
WOODY ALLEN’S A RAINY DAY GETS RELEASE IN HONG KONG: The #MeToo movement isn’t preventing countries in Europe, and now Hong Kong, from releasing Woody Allen‘s films. After Amazon shelved A Rainy Day in New York over remarks he made that were interpreted as critical of #MeToo, Allen has found distribution abroad. A Rainy Day will hit theaters in Hong Kong October 3rd, with a mainland China release expected at a later date. The rom-com stars Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez and Jude Law.
FOX FEELS PRESSURE FROM HOUSE OF MOUSE: Walt Disney Co. is not happy with Twentieth Century Fox, issuing a rare public rebuke as Disney tries to nudge Fox’s earnings along. An unnamed Hollywood producer told Variety: “I’ve never seen a public hanging like that,” after Disney CEO Bob Iger‘s comment that “the Fox studio performance … was well below where it had been and well below where we hoped it would be when we made the acquisition.” Now, Disney is closing down much of Fox’s film development slate, and has started rounds of layoffs, including Fox Film CEO Stacey Snider.
BLACKBIRD TO OPEN SAN SEBASTIAN: Roger Mitchell‘s remake of 2014’s Silent Heart, starring Susan Sarandon and Kate Winslet, will open the 67th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, which runs Sept. 20-Sept. 28.
