HOPE, B.C. — Police are investigating whether a medical condition played a part in a crash on the Coquihalla that left an elderly couple from the Lower Mainland dead.

E-Division Traffic Services Cpl. Mike Halskov tells CFJC Today that emergency crews responded to a fatal crash on Highway 5 near Othello Road Friday afternoon.

“An elderly couple in their 70s was travelling south on Highway 5,” he says. “They had a pickup truck with a camper and utility trailer towing behind it. The vehicle left the roadway, rolled down an embankment, and both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Fraser Valley Traffic Services is continuing the investigation with assistance from the BC Coroners Service.

The BC Coroners Service confirmed the couple was from the Lower Mainland.

“No cause at this time but I think given the age of the people involved here we may be considering medical as a contributing factor but that’s undetermined at this time,” Halskov says.
