MOUNT ROBSON, B.C. — The BC Coroners Service is investigating after a man fell into the Robson River and drowned.

North District RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says in a news release that a 53-year-old Chinese man was with two companions walking along the Berg Lake trail.

The man slipped and fell into the Robson River.

Saunderson says his companions couldn’t reach him and the man was swept away by the fast moving water.

Valemount RCMP, Robson Valley Search and Rescue, BC Parks, Parks Canada and BC Ambulance all responded, but the man was found dead roughly 800 metres downstream from where he fell in.

A swift water rescue team was called in to recover the man from the river. He was a Chinese citizen visiting the area.

Saunderson says this area is the same location where a German tourist drowned in June.

The water moves extremely fast in this area of the river and tragedy, such as this, can happen in seconds,” said Valemount RCMP Cpl. Jacob Joslin in the release. “The RCMP would like to remind people to be extra vigilant when hiking near water.”
