Local team ready to ride to conquer cancer

KAMLOOPS — A group of 18 cyclists known as the Melanoma Warriors are preparing to ride from Cloverdale to Hope for The Ride to Conquer Cancer.

The ride is a fundraiser put on by the BC Cancer Foundation.

Chris Brochu is the team captain for the Melanoma Warriors. His mom says he was inspired by his own experience with skin cancer.

“He was miraculously approved to try some experimental drug treatment,” said Leslie Brochu. “There wasn’t a lot of hope, it was a clinical study, new drugs being trialed in Canada and the US and Europe actually. And so they gave him an opportunity to try those drugs and they worked for him. Just amazing. Once he started to recover he started to get better and better. Five months into treatment he saw a brochure on the Ride to Conquer Cancer, and thought ‘heck, after what I’ve been through, I can give back.”

Money raised through the ride goes to new research drugs like the ones that saved Chris.

The ride takes place on August 24 and 25, but the local team is hosting an event at Chances Casino at the Barside Grill and Lounge next Monday.

“We’ve got music, silent auction, some wine tasting, I think that depending on how much money is raised, Chris may be having his legs waxed all to raise money for the team,” Brochu said. “Each rider’s got to raise $2,500 to ride. So, Monday August the 12 at Chances Casino and people can go online to tiny.cc/melanomawarriors to purchase a ticket.”
