Heat warning issued for Fraser Canyon; Kamloops nearing temperature threshold

LILLOOET, B.C. — A heat warning has been issued for the Fraser Canyon, including Lillooet, and forecasters are watching temperatures in Kamloops to see if one could be issued for the city.

According to Environment Canada’s warning, the affected areas include north to Lillooet and south to Lytton.

A thermal ridge is expected to hang over the B.C. Interior for the next several days, resulting in temperatures reaching 36 C in some areas, combined with overnight lows near 18 C.

Forecaster Bobby Sekhon says the weather forecast for Kamloops is nearing the threshold for a heat warning.

“We’re looking very closely at this potential for a heat warning in Kamloops, tomorrow and Thursday even,” he says. “It’s the overnight lows that are going to be the most tricky for the Kamloops forecast, where right now they’re sitting just one degree below that criteria.”

Sekhon explains that in order for a warning to be put into place, a high temperature of at least 35 C needs to be reached during the day, with an overnight low of 18 C or above, and 35 C again the following day.

He adds the last few days overnight lows have been fairly cool in Kamloops, but with the heat ramping up a warning could be possible in the coming days.

Sekhon says it’s usually not certain until 24 hours in advance whether the temperatures will meet the criteria, so forecasters will be keeping a close eye on Kamloops.

Environment Canada recommends people reduce their heat risk, check on older family, friends and neighbours, and watch for symptoms of heat illness.
