Plenty of August long weekend activities planned around Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Staying in town this August long weekend doesn’t have to mean missing out on a memorable vacation.

Tourism Kamloops has set out to promote the area to the very people who live in it, and hopes residents will choose Kamloops for their holiday.

Whatever way you plan to enjoy the sunshine this weekend, there’s something for everyone in Kamloops.

Mt. Paul Golf Course owner, Danny Latin says a long weekend with favourable weather means the 12 golf courses in the area will have their hands full.

“The weather has been kind, and no smoke which these days is always a bit of a blessing. So yeah it’s been good,” he says. “Because we (Mt. Paul) have the three different areas — the restaurant, the driving range, the golf course, we can get a couple hundred people cycling through various stops.”

Pushing for in-house visitors, Tourism Kamloops CEO Beverley DeSantis says they hope avid bikers, hikers, and campers will choose local when looking for exploration options.

“These are world-renowned. People come here from all over the place to enjoy our great landscapes. So the locals should hang around and see what we have to offer.”

DeSantis says with around 100 lakes within 100 kilometres of Kamloops, and two rivers meeting up in the city centre, cooling down is always possible.

“We’ve got the best beaches around. I don’t know if people really understand how great our beaches are with fresh water,” she stresses. “Throw a paddle board in there, or put a raft in the river. We also have fishing rods here at the visitors centre that we rent out for free.”

Right across the river, the Kamloopa Powwow — western Canada’s largest — celebrates 40 years this weekend at the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Powwow grounds.

For those wanting a slowed paced weekend of relaxation, DeSantis says patio seating is in abundance throughout the city.

“For foodies, we’ve got amazing restaurants and bars and beers and wines and ciders to try that are all made locally. Both on the North Shore and downtown.”

And a staple of summer evenings in Kamloops, the Riverside Park Bandshell will see an army of lawn chairs fill out the grass for Music in the Park.

• Programs/schedule of events are available during Powwow at the gates and main stage.

Saturday Downtown Farmers’ Market

(Held in the 200 block of St. Paul Street & in Stuart Wood Schoolyard)

• A weekly outdoor market of vendors selling locally grown produce, prepared food, and handmade crafts along with non-profit groups from our community.
