Salmon still blocked along Fraser River near Big Bar slide

LILLOOET, B.C. — Work to rehabilitate the Fraser River near Big Bar is continuing.

A landslide narrowed the canyon and created a five-metre waterfall, making the area virtually impassable for migrating salmon. Tens of thousands of salmon have already been counted just below the site of the slide and more are arriving every day.

Officials with federal, provincial and Indigenous governments are working together to rehabilitate the river, and create a natural passageway for the salmon.

Controlled blasting is being conducted to support efforts to place boulders in the river and create back eddys and pools for the fish.

Meantime a temporary fish ladder has been assembled and is ready to go into the water. It will also help fish navigate through the troubled area.

2,300 Sockeye and Chinook salmon have now been transported upstream of the blockage by helicopters. A second large helicopter is now being used in that part of the operation.

Although the landslide was only discovered around June 21, satellite images suggest the landslide may have occurred late last fall.
