Rainy July making way for hot August

KAMLOOPS — July weather was slightly cooler and wetter than average, but it’s looking like a different story for August.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon, the Kamloops area was around 0.8 degrees cooler than the average temperature of 21.5 degrees in July.

The daytime highs were about a degree cooler than normal.

Typically, Kamloops would receive 31 millimetres of rain throughout the month, but received 36 millimetres in July.

“So, just about five millimetres above the average,” Sekhon said. “But, it’s important to note that about 14 millimetres came on the 18th of July with some heavy showers moving through, so it’s often the case in Kamloops is there will be some heavy showers on a couple of days that boost up those precipitation averages.”

The upcoming long weekend will bring the hot, sunny, dry weather that is typical of August.

While precipitation is difficult to predict long-term, August is generally much drier than June and July.

“What I can tell you is that temperature-wise our seasonal models are indicating above normal temperatures for August,” Sekhon said. “It’s hard to say by how much, or if that means heat waves or whether that means a little bit each day, but overall the average of the month in August at least slightly above normal.”
